Library Journal: October 2012

Needleturn appliqué—a handwork technique for sewing fabric shapes to a background fabric using small, hidden stitches—is a classic of quilting. Experienced instructor Lawrence introduces novices to hand appliqué, covering the steps from selecting the appropriate supplies to transferring the design to basic and intermediate stitching. Close-up color photographs illustrate each step, and patterns and templates for nine projects, including wall hangings, table runners, and small quilts, are included. VERDICT Learning needleturn appliqué from a book may seem like a daunting prospect, but quilters familiar with basic handwork will find this book useful.

Barbara Rhoades: December 2012

This book will teach you everything you ever needed to know about needle turn appliqué. It begins with over 25 pages of how-to from preparing the shapes to embellishing the appliqués and everything in between. Nine projects are included and the best part is the packet of full sized appliqués ready for you to transfer to whatever you want. The projects include wall hangings, quilts and a table runner. Use your imagination and you could do pillows, tote bags and table cloths too. Simple to follow materials and cutting lists are included with the written instructions. There are enough graphics so you won’t get lost or misunderstand the written words. The fabrics the author suggests are bright and fun. Grab a copy and start your adventure with appliqué today.

The Appliqué Society Newsletter: Patti Ives, September/October 2012

Needleturn Appliqué The basics & beyond is the 11th book in the Landauer Publishing’s best-selling basics & beyond technique series. In this book Angela Lawrence, who has been teaching needleturn appliqué for a number of years, shares the basic techniques that she teaches in her classroom. You will learn everything you need to know to create a full range of needleturn appliqué projects. In addition to the extensive chapter on supplies and tools you will find information on fabric color and selection including the six key elements to consider when selecting fabrics. The heart of the book, of course, is the needleturn instructions themselves. The template plastic method, freezer paper method, tracing method, and overlay method are discussed along with beautiful color close-up photos to help you see exactly what the author is teaching. The appliqué stitch is covered in detail. The author touches on every possible scenario you may encounter while stitching, including circles, curves and creating bias stems. Layering appliqué shapes, reverse appliqué and embellishing techniques top off the instructional part of the book. There are 9 colorful and fun projects for you to practice what you have learned, with all the patterns bound in an envelope at the back of the book. They are sized at 100% so no need to enlarge. I particularly liked all the hints and tips the author sprinkles throughout the book.

Quilters Newsletter: February/March 2013
