If you love appliqué, then this is a must have book for you. Ms. Sitar has compiled a year of seasonal appliqués in this book. She has also included five types of settings and techniques on raw-edge appliqué and background quilting. 14 pages cover the basics and then the patterns follow. A color photo with a paragraph of explanation about the quilt is found. The materials list is set off in a framed colored box and the cutting list is easy to follow. Templates/placement diagrams are shown on the page of the instructions but there are tear-out sheets in the back of the book as well, all at full size. None of the patterns show more than the material or cuttings lists as the five setting directions provide this information. You choose whether you want a wall hanging, table runner, bed runner, large wall hanging or a quilt. Again, the materials needed to complete your item of choice are set off in a framed colored box. Quilting for your item is done by fusing the appliqué to the block, creating the item and then making the sandwich and quilting the appliqué and background. No other quilting motifs are needed. If you are looking for a quick project or one that takes a while, this book will give you one for just the amount of time you want to spend.

Seasonal Silhouettes is Edyta Sitar's newest book. Inside you will find 12 raw-edge appliqué blocks inspired by nature, along with 5 project settings. The instructions in this book are very well written and complete. The technique used, raw-edge appliqué, requires that you fuse the block pieces to the background then machine stitch around each piece. Instructions and photos walk you through each step in the process. Edyta shares her thoughts on supplies and her techniques for selecting fabrics. The design of the blocks are just beautiful and well drawn. Each of the 12 blocks comes with a full size placement diagram with each piece identified by a number for easy placement on your block. Background quilting and binding is also covered. Make a project for each season or a quilt using all 12 blocks.
Midwest Book Review—Wisconsin Bookwatch: June 2013
“Seasonal Silhouettes: 12 Inspirational Quilt Blocks Featuring Raw-Edge Appliqué" is a beautiful bouquet of 12 stunning quilt blocks with raw edge appliqué, designed to reflect the beauty, color and drama of the changing seasons. Each block can be made as a separate project (there are five setting ideas), or they can be combined into a 12-block full size quilt. Beautiful color photographs of finished blocks, projects and quilts enhance this lovely book. The craft of silhouette appliqué designing is perfectly illustrated in these artistic block patterns. Along with step by step instructions for raw-edge appliqué technique, full size templates for each block are included, no enlarging needed. Background quilting and binding techniques are also explained, and complete supply lists and fabric requirements for each block are stated clearly. The color photos of the completed blocks are stunning. As a measure of the author's artistry, for example, the pattern for June includes the following: "Pink painted daisies, mouth-watering watermelon and unexpected guests are the perfect trio for a summertime picnic." When the reader looks closely a tiny black ant, created with fabric marker, crawls along the luscious slice of watermelon. Thus nature is the inspiration for each seasonal silhouette's pattern and design and color palette. These shimmering quilted blocks are subtly magnificent, inspiring quilters everywhere to new heights of creativity.
